Fans were stunned by Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana's voice following Belgium's Euro 2024 opener against Slovakia.

Slovakia recorded a historic victory in their opening group game of the tournament at Belgium's expense, with Domenico Tedesco's men unable to stage a comeback after an early goal from Ivan Schranz.

Belgium had twice found the back of the net through Romelu Lukaku, but VAR intervened both times to rule out his strikes, with the second being chalked off using never before seen ball tech.

Despite the loss, Everton midfielder Onana, was one of the standout performers for the Group E favourites winning more duels than anyone else on the pitch.

Onana thought he had helped Belgium to an equaliser as his cross-goal effort was turned over the line by Lukaku before VAR's intervention.

After the disappointing result, Onana headed to the mixed zone where he took questions from reporters. Indeed, he was less than impressed when addressed as 'Andre' by one journalist, who clearly confused his name with that of Manchester United shot-stopper Andre Onana.

The Belgium midfielder switched from French instantly to correct the British reporter with a brutal response.

"Andre is not even my name mate," the midfielder responded in a comically impressive English accent.

And fans on social media were quick to marvel at Onana's English.

One person joked on X, formally Twitter: "Sensational change of aura from Amadou Onana here. He went from BBC Four to ITV2 in an instant."

A second said: "Man went full East end, Danny Dyer on him."

A third wrote: "Him and Isak always throw me off from how good their English is."

A fourth added: "Bit like Rodney in ‘Only Fools and Horses’ when Trigger kept calling him Dave."

Onana is a player in high demand this summer with Arsenal interested as Everton expected to cash in on their most valuable assets.

Liverpool Echo’s Everton correspondent Joe Thomas confirmed Arsenal's interest on social media, claiming: “New: Arsenal have enquired about the availability of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.”

Onana himself has made no secret of his desire to leave Goodison Park, speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, as per the Evening Standard ahead of the tournament: “At previous tournaments, you have seen that the players who did well make the step up to the top clubs. That’s something I strive for.

“I feel like presenting myself to the European top and showing what I have to offer. This European Championship is a stage.”
