Manchester United have been struggling of late. Their win over Leicester City on the opening day of the season appeared to paper over the cracks. But a 3-2 loss to Brighton - considered relegation candidates by most - has thrown the club into crisis mode.

Jose Mourinho has made his feelings clear. The transfer window wasn't good enough - Man United couldn't manage to bring in a first-choice centre-back and their only major signing was Brazilian midfielder Fred.

But the Daily Mail report that there's a reason why funds have been so tight.

Ed Woodward's efforts have been towards the club's youth academy and scouting department, not transfers. In fact, the academy has received seven times more investment that it has done recently. It appears that Woodward is working very much with the future in mind.

Mourinho, however, is a man known for not hanging around long. He wants immediacy. Three years is the magic number. After which, he leaves the side he is managing and heads off in a different direction.

Despite the financial differences, the Mail also report that the Man United board are confident that the two can resolve their differences.

Whether that happens or not, however, remains to be seen.

Even still, Mourinho is refusing to criticise his current players. He said via the I Paper: "The team, at half time we tried and in the second half. I think in a mental point of view, the accumulation of the mistakes and the punishment of these mistakes with goals was, step-by-step, giving happiness and confidence to a team like Brighton, and they took that confidence from us."
