Former Manchester United defender Alexander Buttner has shared an image of his life-size mural featuring Sir Alex Ferguson - and the online response has not been kind.

The Dutch left-back won the Premier League with Fergie's side in 2012/13 and has paid homage to his two years as a United player with a painted mural in his home. Shared via Instagram, it shows Buttner and Sir Alex with the league trophy.

At least, we assume it's Sir Alex - because frankly it looks nothing like him and fans on social media have suggested it looks closer to Roy Hodgson, Terry Butcher or Bradley Walsh.

"Looks more like Sarah Ferguson than Sir Alex," commented one United fan on Instagram.

"Did he draw it himself? With his feet?!" asked another on Twitter. Some cruelly asked whether Emanuel Santos - the man behind the botched Cristiano Ronaldo bust - was responsible for the painting.

The artwork is actually based on a rather heart-warming photo of the two Alexs in the dressing room in 2013, celebrating with the Premier League trophy.

But this painted version is arguably not a faithful replica, due to everything from Fergie's face to the sheer size of his gargantuan left hand. Surely if the managerial legend had a hand this big we would have noticed by now?

Buttner's caption on IG read: "Wall at home! Memories! Champion of England with the boss."

The player arrived at Man United from Vitesse in 2012. However Buttner left the club in 2014 having played just 28 games over two seasons, moving on to Dynamo Moscow, to Anderlecht, than back to Vitesse.

But at least the full-back - now 32 - got to play under one of the all-time great managers during the final season of Fergie's career.

It clearly means a lot to Buttner, as he proudly shared the Image with his 226,000 Instagram followers.

Although we'd perhaps cover up this monstrosity of a mural if Sir Alex ever pops over for a cup of tea.
