Fans Love Joel Matip’s Miserable Face During Champions League Anthem

Joel Matip has proved himself Liverpool's king of memes with his vacant, deadpan face as the Champions League anthem boomed around Anfield.

As the camera panned past the 29-year-old defender in the line-up before Tuesday's group game against Ajax, Matip could be seen chewing gum and giving a 4,000-yard stare like he was waiting for a bus in the rain.

"Joel wondering if he left the bathroom light on," speculated one football fan.

Like... when you can't remember if you locked your front door," offered another.

Sublime. Whatever Matip was thinking about, it clearly worked. Because with a lively Ajax team in front of him - and an inexperienced goalkeeper in Caoimhin Kelleher behind him - the Cameroonian was still able to keep a clean sheet.

Curtis Jones' neat outside-of-the-boot finish (his first Champions League goal) gave Liverpool a 1-0 win and sealed their place in the knockout stages as Group D winners.

And Matip has sealed his place as the low-key king of LFC reactions. The No Context Joel Matip twitter account regularly gives football fans a treat, from his "jazz hands" to his stone-faced reactions.

"It's funny and I think I make a lot of people laugh, so it's not too bad," he told Liverpoolfc.com last year.

"I can laugh about myself, that's absolutely no problem. I'm looking at this and I say, 'Ah, that's quite funny'."

Great that Matip can see the funny side of his celebrity status on social media. Even though he really didn't look like cracking a smile against Ajax on Tuesday.
