Manchester United midfielder Donny van De Beek shocked many fans with his screaming reaction to a tough challenge in his first Premier League start.

He then got up and sprinted forward to receive ball just moments late, leaving some fans to criticise him for making too much of the tackle.

However, posting a picture after the 3-2 victory away against Southampton, the Netherlands international may be explaining what caused him to react so bizarrely to the knock on his ankle.

Van De Beek posted an image of his ballooning ankle to Instagram with the caption 'welcome to the Premier League' - and it certainly looked damaged.

The 23-year-old played well at St. Mary's as Man United came from two goals down at half time to win 3-2 on Sunday. James Ward-Prowse and Jan Bednarek scored for the Saints in the first 45 before Bruno Fernandes and an Edinson Cavani brace saved manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from more questions about his suitability for Old Trafford.

Van De Beek will be happy with his performance, building on a bright game mid-week in their 4-1 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League. These improved showings come after some supporters had doubted the ex-Ajax ace's ability to adapt to the Premier League while he was settling in earlier in the campaign.

However, now that he's playing more often, he may have to get used to being on the receiving end of a few more of these than he was in the Eredivisie...
