Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne has been named the best player in the world by the popular game Football Manager.

FM 23 launched on Tuesday and it has got fans talking already after a list of the top 10 players in the game was released.

City star de Bruyne came out top, followed by Paris Saint Germain megastar Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona’s Polish striker Robert Lewandowski. Liverpool’s 'Egyptian King' Mohamed Salah was fourth and the freshly crowned Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema rounded up the top five.

De Bruyne’s City teammate Erling Haaland was in sixth place, just ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s England captain Harry Kane.

Thibaut Courtois was the only goalkeeper on the list as he was ranked eighth. With Virgil van Dijk ninth and Argentina legend Lionel Messi in a perhaps unfamiliar 10th place.

Fans were quick to react to de Bruyne being named the best player in the world by FM 23.

One said: “I'm not a city fan or even a KDB fan particularly, but someone has to be top, and he makes a very good case for himself on a regular basis.”

Another tweeted: “That’s why the FM franchise has the best ball knowledge in the game.”

A third fan added: “As he should be.”

Whilst a rival fan joked: “Did you mean to spell Almiron like that? Or did FM make the mistake, not you.”

Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo was ranked 100th by FM 23. Which as expected, got a lot of reactions from fans all over social media.

One fan commented: “Silly and insulting.”

Another said: “That’s generous considering his form this season.”

A third person agreed: “Based on this season that is VERY generous.”

In the new edition of FM, gamers are able to enjoy the Champions League in full as they now have the UEFA license, meaning fans will be able to hear the famous Champions League anthem.

Sports Interactive’s studio director, Miles Jacobson said: "We've got the music for all three tournaments and we're still mucking about with it now.

"At the moment, we're also experimenting with the longer form version of the Champions League anthem and how that can build up in-game, so we'll see what happens when it's released. We want people to feel special when they play in these tournaments."
