Fans are convinced Beth Mead has been 'robbed' after Alexia Putellas' Best FIFA Awards win

Fans are convinced Beth Mead has been 'robbed' after Alexia Putellas' Best FIFA Awards win

Alexia Putellas was named women’s player of the year

Fans feel England player Beth Mead has been robbed after Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas was named women’s player of the year at the Best FIFA Awards.

On Monday night, the stars of the football world arrived in Paris to celebrate the best footballing moments of the year.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Argentina's World Cup-winning captain Lionel Messi took home the big prize from the men’s category as he was named the best male player of the year.

Spanish international Putellas was named the women’s best player of the year.

However, fans felt that Mead should have won instead of the 29-year-old.

They took to social media to express their displeasure over the decision.

One said: “Beth Mead was robbed yet again. Meado, we love you so much and you deserve so much better.”

Another tweeted: “Beth Mead robbed off another award. The last time Putellas played football was 2021.”

A third fan added: “Beth Mead robbed again! Sam Kerr is not even in the top three either.”

Someone else wrote: “The FIFARCE awards have struck again #FIFATHEBEST Beth mead robbed once again.”

Whilst a fifth commented: “Beth Mead robbed again. Putellas injured since July 2022 yet somehow wins. Embarrassing.”

England manager Sarina Wiegman was named coach of the year after guiding England to Euro glory.

During her acceptance speech, she said: “From when I could walk I have loved football. It's just incredible to be right here and to celebrate women's football.

“Little girls have their idols and inspirations. So many people across the world have worked so hard to get the game where it is right now.”

Wiegman added: “As for last summer, the stadiums were full. Wembley was full and there were so many families in the stadiums celebrating football. Behind me is a big team. Without great players, you are nowhere.”

Do you think Mead should have won the award? Let us know in the comment.
