Reason Why There are Two FA Cup Draws but Fans Only Get to See One on TV

The fourth-round draw will be made twice but fans will only see one

Teams will learn their FA Cup fourth-round fate on Monday evening with the draw taking place ahead of Liverpool's third-round tie against Barnsley.

Those to advance to the next round will hope for a favourable draw as they look to go far in football’s oldest cup competition.

There will be a new winner this year after Crystal Palace crashed out of the FA Cup at the expense of National League North side Macclesfield in one of the biggest upsets in history.

Macclesfield, forged from the ashes of Macclesfield Town five years ago and managed by the brother of football icon Wayne Rooney, became the first non-league team in 117 years to beat the FA Cup holders.

Glasner laments his players following FA Cup upset

Palace boss Oliver Glasner was left stunned by the FA Cup giant killing before laying into his players after Saturday’s 2-1 loss.

“Congratulations to Macclesfield. We lacked any kind of quality today. Conceding a set-play from a header - we had to do better. The second goal was slapstick,” Glasner said.

“At the other end, if you can't create clear-cut chances... it's just a lack of quality what we've shown today. We lost and we deserved to lose. I was looking for quality from everyone. I brought on more attacking players [at half-time], but I have no explanation for what I've seen today.

“You don't need tactics in these kinds of games. You just have to show what you're capable of and show a little bit of pride, and you'll perform in a different way. But today we lacked everything.”

Glasner added: “I think our U21s would have done better than we have done today.”

Macclesfield are one of a number of teams across the country to have progressed to the next round of the FA Cup, including Wrexham, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Chelsea.

And the Silkmen will hope for a big draw as they look for another day in the spotlight as they wait to learn who their fourth-round opponents will be.

All those to have progressed will be involved in not one by two FA Cup fourth-round draws to ensure the main event runs as smoothly as possible.

While the draw itself is over in minutes, those pulling the balls from the bowl need to go through a practise run to ensure everything runs according to plan.

Why is the draw made twice?

The short duration of the slot means meticulous planning goes into the event to guarantee guests are stood in the right spot as the TNT Sports production team evaluate the studio setup.

Former host Jake Humphrey occasionally shared the results of the practise draw, with one run-through previously revealing that Manchester United had been drawn against fierce rivals Liverpool.

When asked why there is a rehearsal, Humphrey replied on X: “It's more about making sure the lighting is right, the cameras know which shots to get, the satellite link to the globe is stable, the graphics are all ready, the bits of VT are right and that we do the draw in the right amount of time allotted to us.”

The draw will take place prior to Liverpool’s third-round welcome of Barnsley on Monday night as the Reds look to avoid a giant killing at the first hurdle.
