Switzerland have suffered a major injury scare days before their Euro 2024 clash with England.

Murat Yakin's side have been one of the surprise packages of the tournament in Germany, having already booked their place in the last eight with victory over Italy on Saturday.

Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas scored to give the Swiss a deserved victory in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin to continue their impressive run of results.

Switzerland had already held hosts Germany to a 1-1 draw in the group stage of the tournament and will be a formidable opponent for England this weekend.

The Three Lions reached the quarter-finals in much less convincing fashion, needing a last-gasp equaliser from Jude Bellingham and an extra-time winner from Harry Kane to beat Slovakia on Sunday.

Switzerland will certainly fancy their chances against Gareth Southgate's side, who could be without Bellingham for the game.

The Real Madrid star is facing a potential suspension after being investigated by UEFA over a gesture he made after the win over Slovakia.

England are already without defender Marc Guehi, who is suspended for the match against Switzerland after picking up an early booking on Sunday.

But the Swiss are also facing a potential selection headache, with captain Granit Xhaka a major doubt for the match.

The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder, who has been one of the stand-out performers in the tournament so far, has revealed he has been dealing with a muscle injury that caused him to miss training last Thursday.

The former Arsenal midfielder felt the problem again during the final stages of the win over Italy but is hopeful he will be fully fit to face England.

"We practised penalty shootouts before the Italy game. On my first attempt I felt something in my left adductor," Xhaka told a press conference.

"That's why I skipped training on Thursday. On Friday in the final training session everything was fine again.

"But in the game I felt it again after 15 minutes. Luckily we have very good doctors who gave me something for it. I was able to play the whole game afterwards, which was important for me.

"We'll do an MRI on Monday and see what exactly it is. But I have seven days now to get everything treated."

Xhaka also sent a warning to England about underestimating Switzerland, believing his nation can go even further in the competition.

"I'm not going to say we're going to win the tournament," Xhaka added.

"But we're going to do everything we can to get there. I feel like we're not done yet. We're hungrier than ever."
