Darwin Nunez has been destroyed in a brutal fail compilation after seeing red on his first ever Premier League start on Monday night.

The Uruguayan striker, a club-record £85 million signing from Benfica in the summer, opened his account on his debut when he came off the bench to score against Fulham last week.

With Roberto Firmino injured, Nunez was handed his first start in the English top tier against Crystal Palace at Anfield and looked to build on his impressive first outing.

The former Almeria man had a few sniffs at goal, fluffing his lines badly at the far post and then hitting the post with a scruffy effort after being played in behind the backline with a long pass.

He was also fed by Mo Salah in the second half but couldn't quite adjust his feet out and appealed for handball after Joel Ward's block.

But the worst was to happen as Nunez completely lost his head just before the hour mark and planted a headbutt right on the nose of Joachim Andersen.

The two had a tussle in the penalty area, with Andersen giving the striker a little chest bump into his back and Nunez responding by moving his head towards the Dane.

He was remonstrating with the referee and calling for a foul when Anderson angrily confronted him with a shove and that's when Nunez produced the second headbutt - this one more violent than the first.

Andersen fell to the floor and it was right in front of referee Paul Tierney, who made one of the easiest decisions of his career as an official.

Luis Diaz scored a glorious solo goal to level matters for the 10-man Reds, who still dominated possession but couldn't find that second and are still awaiting their first win of the new campaign.

Nunez will now serve a three-match suspension, starting with the trip to Old Trafford to play Manchester United next week.

Manager Jurgen Klopp called for Nunez to control his emotions better in the future and had no complaints over

the dismissal.

“There was provocation but it was definitely the wrong reaction,” Klopp said in his press conference.

“He will learn from that. Unfortunately he has now three games to do that. It is not cool for us but it is how it is.

"Of course I will speak with him. I came in [after the game] and wanted to see the situation [on TV].

"In the game I could not see anything so I could know what happened. I saw Andersen on the floor and Darwin walking away. "That was my picture. Then I saw it – yes it is a red card. Wrong reaction in the situation. Andersen wanted that, he got it but he (Núñez) made a mistake. Of course I will talk about it with Darwin but not yet.”

Liverpool are four points behind leaders and reigning champions Manchester City after two games.
