Cristiano Ronaldo pays touching tribute to 'the eternal king' Pele after the Brazil legend passes away

Cristiano Ronaldo has paid a touching tribute to Pele on social media following his tragic death on Thursday.

The Brazil legend sadly passed away at 82 after a long battle with colon cancer.

His agent, Joe Fraga, confirmed the three-time World Cup winner's passing on Thursday, with a statement released on his Twitter account.

"Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today," it read.

"Love, love and love, forever."

The entire sport is mourning the loss of an absolute icon as Neymar gave a beautiful tribute that perfectly summed up Pele's impact on football.

Ronaldo has now sent his condolences to the former Santos player in a powerful message.

On Instagram, he wrote: "My deep condolences to all of Brazil, and in particular to the family of Edson Arantes do Nascimento.

"A mere 'goodbye' to the eternal King Pelé will never be enough to express the pain that the entire football world is currently embracing. An inspiration to so many millions, a reference yesterday, today and forever.

"The love you always showed me was reciprocated in every moment we shared even from distance. He will never be forgotten and his memory will live forever in each and every one of us football lovers.

"Rest in peace King Pelé."

Pele said he was looking forward to seeing Ronaldo in a congratulatory message after the Portugal international received an award from FIFA for breaking the international goal-scoring record.

"I'm looking forward to meeting you in person to give you my hug," he said earlier this year.

"I recorded this message with great care. See you soon."

Lionel Messi also paid his respects, simply saying: "Rest in peace, Pele."

Kylian Mbappe posted a picture of himself alongside Pele, accompanied with the caption: "The king of football has left us but his legacy will never be forgotten. RIP KING."
