Cristiano Ronaldo's reaction from the bench during embarrassing defeat to Man City says it all

He was far from impressed.

Unused substitute Cristiano Ronaldo couldn't hide his emotions during Manchester United's humiliating 6-3 defeat to local rivals Manchester City.

Phil Foden and Erling Haaland bagged hat-tricks at the Etihad as Premier League champions City dominated from the get go.

In fact, hundreds of United supporters were spotted leaving the stadium before half-time on Sunday, with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish continuing to cause problems in attacking areas.

It was a day to forget for Erik ten Hag and his United side, who managed three consolation goals through Antony and Anthony Martial [2].

Ten Hag, meanwhile, decided to use all five of his substitutes during the Premier League clash.

Casemiro, Luke Shaw, Fred, Anthony Martial and Victor Lindelof were used to try and reduce the deficit; all while five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo remained on the subs bench.

Ronaldo, who has started just one league game for United this season, was sat next to former Real Madrid teammate Casemiro in the first-half.

And after Erling Haaland netted his second goal of the game, the 37-year-old's reaction to going 3-0 down was caught on camera. "Damn, it's hard to watch," said one Twitter user.

The Portuguese forward was clearly in disbelief at what he was witnessing on Sunday.

First of all, he was sat next to Casemiro, a five-time Champions League winner who was once again left out following his summer arrival.

And after it emerged that he would not be coming on as a second-half substitute, Ronaldo looked fed up by the events unfolding before his eyes.

Things could have been very different for Ronaldo on Sunday had last summer's transfer to Manchester City happened.

Last month, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed just how close the forward came to joining Pep Guardiola's side before his return to Old Trafford.

"As you'll remember last summer, there were talks over a surprise move for Cristiano Ronaldo to join Manchester City," wrote Romano, in his column for CaughtOffside.

"Still, it was never 100 percent approved by the board or by the technical staff at City.

"There were also some issues at Ronaldo's end with his agent Jorge Mendes, so the deal collapsed, even though Juventus were happy to accept the move.

"In the end, United appeared on the scene and Ronaldo was happy to join them as soon as their interest became apparent."
