The body of former Newcastle United player Christian Atsu has been found under rubble, 12 days after the devastating earthquake in Turkey that has so far claimed the lives of more than 45,000 people.

Atsu was confirmed missing within hours of the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6.

The 31-year-old, who scored a 97th-minute free kick for Turkish Super Lig side Hatayspor in their 1-0 win over Kasimpasa on Sunday, February 5, was set to leave the country but cancelled his plane ticket shortly before the disaster.

According to Hatayspor administrative manager Fatih Ilek, Atsu was going abroad to visit his family but when he played well and scored, he cancelled his ticket.

"The earthquake happened on his happiest day," Ilek said. "He had a flight at 11pm. Cancelled the ticket. There was an earthquake at 4 am. Absolutely a tragedy."

Almost two weeks after the earthquake hit, it was confirmed on Saturday morning by his agent, Nana Sechere, that Atsu's body has been discovered.

He said: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning. My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.

"I ask that whilst we make the necessary arrangements, that everyone would please respect the privacy of the family during this very difficult time."

Hatayspor tweeted on Saturday: "Sorry for your loss. The funeral of our football player Christian Atsu, who lost his life under the collapse, is on his way to be sent to his hometown Ghana. We will not forget you, Atsu. Peace be upon you, beautiful person. There are no words to describe our sadness. Rest in peace."

Atsu's former club Newcastle also released a statement, saying: "We are profoundly saddened to learn that Christian Atsu has tragically lost his life in Turkey's devastating earthquakes.

"A talented player and a special person, he will always be fondly remembered by our players, staff and supporters. Rest in peace, Christian."

Chelsea, a club Atsu played for between 2013 and 2017, said they received the news of his death with "enormous sadness".

"Chelsea sends our heartfelt condolences to Christian's family and friends and to all those affected by the earthquake tragedy," a statement read.

Atsu made 65 appearances for Ghana, scoring 10 goals in that time, and enjoyed loan spells at Everton, Bournemouth and Malaga.

Our thoughts go out to his friends, family and loved ones.
