Premier League Club Consider Shock Move For Reading Striker Andy Carroll

Burnley are reportedly considering a move for Reading striker Andy Carroll as they look to find a replacement for Chris Wood.

Sean Dyche’s side suffered a significant blow in their battle against the drop after Wood joined relegation rivals Newcastle in a £25m move on Thursday.

Wood signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at St James’ Park after Newcastle activated the striker’s release clause at Turf Moor.

Burnley are now scrambling to find another striker before the January transfer window closes.

According to The Daily Mail, Burnley view Carroll as a potential replacement for Wood, who scored 53 goals in 165 games during his time in Lancashire.

Carroll is out of contract this month after signing a short-term deal with Reading in November.

The 33-year-old reportedly accepted a wage of £1,000-per-week to prove his form and fitness at the Championship club, after being released by Newcastle in the summer.

Carroll has managed only one goal in seven appearances for the Royals and had two spectacular strikes ruled out for offside in Tuesday’s defeat to Fulham.

However, despite his lack of goals, Carroll has reportedly impressed Dyche with his performances this season.

Meanwhile, senior figures at Burnley are said to be furious at losing Wood to Newcastle and are disappointed that the 30-year-old would leave them in such circumstances.

Burnley are currently third bottom of the Premier League, above Newcastle only on goal difference.

Reading, meanwhile, are hopeful of convicing Carroll to remain at the Madejski Stadium.

The striker’s deal is due to expire on January 15 but manager Veljko Paunovic has confirmed the club have made him an offer to extend his stay.

"We did make our best possible offer and approach so we are now waiting for a response," he said.

"Definitely, we were on time with our deadline and we are expecting the best possible outcome."
