A Bundesliga footballer has been arrested by Spanish police in Ibiza on suspicion of raping a teenager.

The player was arrested along with another man after the 18-year-old told police that she had been sexually assaulted at a villa in San Jose, the villa is a short drive away from the local airport.

Daily Star reported that sources have said the teenager had been taken to hospital after the incident took place.

The alleged assault is said to have happened in the early hours of Wednesday, with the two men arrested later on in the day.

At the moment, it is believed to be unclear whether the men arrested have appeared before an investigating judge in an initial court hearing.

A hearing is due to take place behind closed doors to decide whether they will be released on bail pending an ongoing criminal probe or remanded in custody.

The footballer in question has recently extended his contract with his club, which is one of Germany’s most successful clubs. the club has won the national championship on multiple occasions.

A Civil Guard spokesman confirmed the following in a short statement.

He said: “Two German nationals have been arrested after a woman told police she had been sexually assaulted in Ibiza.

“An investigation is ongoing.”

“A well-placed source said one of the two men is a footballer who plays in the Bundesliga.”

None of the men arrested have been named in the press, German news outlets are yet to report the arrest but local Ibizan newspaper has done so.

The alleged sexual assault is said to have took place in a villa understood to be near Cova Santa, which is an ancient natural cave with a large restaurant, lounge garden and club where shows and concerts are scheduled to take place during the summer.

It was reported that court officials could not be reached for comment early on Saturday morning.
