Brazil could reportedly face a points deduction following ugly scenes in Wednesday's 1-0 defeat to Argentina.

A brawl broke out in the Maracana stands between both sets of supporters, leading to a 30-minute delay.

Players on either side attempted to get involved and calm things down. Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez pleaded with law enforcement to stop the violence as they clashed with fans.

Lionel Messi decided to lead his teammates off the pitch after seeing what was going on.

The Brazilian Football Confederation is now facing punishment. Article 17 of the FIFA disciplinary code reads: "Host clubs and associations are responsible for order and security both in and around the stadium before, during and after matches."

Brazil are also 'liable for incidents' that occurred during the game as the hosts.

It's been claimed by Globo that FIFA is ready to open an investigation into the Selecao and what happened.

Potential punishments could include fines, playing games without fans, playing on a neutral ground or even having points deducted.

It could be a huge blow for Brazil, who are currently sixth in South American qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Six teams automatically qualify for the tournament, and a seventh enters an inter-confederation play-off. Brazil usually qualify automatically and a points deduction could put that in serious jeopardy.

Argentina won the game thanks to a goal from Nicolas Otamendi just past the hour mark.

The current World Cup holders are top of the group with five wins from their opening six games.

Post-match, Messi condemned the treatment of Argentinians inside the stadium.

The 36-year-old stressed: "We went to the locker room because it was the best way to calm everything down, it could have ended in tragedy."

He later took to Instagram and said: "Great victory in the Maracana, although it will be marked by the repression of the Argentinians in Brazil.

"This can’t be tolerated, it’s insane and it needs to end now!"
