Football fans rose before dawn to watch the Socceroos take on Denmark in the World Cup and hoo boy, was it worth it.

They went absolutely berserk when Australia qualified for the World Cup Round of 16 thanks to a 1-0 win over Denmark.

It was a nail-biting final group match day that saw Tunisia and the Socceroos battle it out for the second spot in the group.

Matthew Leckie scored a wonderful solo effort in the 60th minute to send Australia into raptures across the country and overseas.

Jubilated Aussies are now calling for a national holiday to properly celebrate the win.

One user said: "Can you imagine how f**king leathered everyone is in Australia already. Now they’re going to be drinking until 8am easily. They may as well declare a national holiday because f**k all is happening for the next few days."

A second added: "Australia deserves a national holiday after this."

A third piped up: "Realistically what would it take for Australia to get a public holiday based on Australia doing well in the football."

Others just declared a national holiday anyway: "Public holiday tomorrow in Australia."

Despite the ones that are already calling it, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said nothing of the sort... yet.

But we can all dream.

Albanese did give the team a shoutout on social media though, saying: "Magnificent win by the Socceroos."

He added a hashtag on the end that said 'woo hoo', which is a pretty light summary of how Aussies are feeling right now.

Videos have captured fans in a state of euphoria in the early hours of December 1, with some lighting flares as they celebrated the enormous victory.

Speaking after his side's win, national team boss Graham Arnold said: "I'm so proud of the effort by the boys. There was a short turnaround but their effort was incredible.

"A lot of belief and hard work. These boys come in with a great mindset. We've been working on this for the last four/four and a half years about the belief, the energy and the focus. I could see in their eyes, they were ready tonight."

He added: "No celebrations! That's why we won after a great win against Tunisia, no celebrations, no emotion, sleep and no social media."

France topped Group D despite losing 1-0 to Tunisia while Australia finished runners-up.
