FIFA's World Cup Team of the Tournament revealed with just one England star selected

FIFA has named its Team of the Tournament for the 2026 World Cup, and just one England player has been included.

Following Sunday's (July 19) World Cup final between eventual winners Spain and Argentina, several individual awards were handed out.

Lionel Messi could only manage to finish second in the Golden Boot race, ending the tournament on eight goals behind Kylian Mbappe, who scored 10.

Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland netted seven each, while Harry Kane and Ousmane Dembele finished the tournament with six goals apiece.

Spain captain Rodri received the Golden Ball, awarded to the tournament's best player, with Messi and Mbappe handed the Silver and Bronze Balls respectively.

Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon won the Golden Glove after conceding just one goal in eight World Cup matches, while his compatriot Pau Cubarsi picked up the FIFA Young Player Award.

Despite going out to Morocco in the round of 32, the Netherlands received the FIFA Fair Play Award after collecting just three yellow cards.

Now, FIFA has named its Team of the Tournament and, to the surprise of many, Bellingham is England's only representative despite the Three Lions finishing third.

As expected, three Spain players – Rodri, Marc Cucurella and Pedro Porro – made the line-up, while France's Dayot Upamecano, Michael Olise and Mbappe also made the XI.

Messi and Lisandro Martinez are Argentina's two representatives, while Norway's Haaland also made the team.

Jordan Pickford, Unai Simon and Mike Maignan may feel slightly hard done by missing out on the goalkeeper spot, as Cape Verde's Vozinha got the nod.

Fans were quick to give their thoughts on social media.

One said: “How is Yamal not in this? He won the whole thing and still can’t crack the Team of the Tournament, while Messi makes it after Argentina lost the final. I'd have him in over Olise at least.”

Another added: “A goalkeeper who conceded literally ONE goal in the whole World Cup deserves his spot in this XI. And swapping Upamecano for Cubarsí is a no-brainer. How do you leave out the World Cup Best Young Player?”

A third claimed: “Unai Simón won Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament but failed to be included in the FIFA Team of the Tournament. How is this even possible?”

As a fourth commented: “Solid XI overall, but I'd swap Upamecano for Saliba. He looked more composed defensively throughout the tournament. Other than that, it's hard to argue with most of these selections.”

While a fifth wrote: “Who invited Messi? Kane should be there to replace Messi. Pau Cubarsí, on the other hand, was not better than Martinez. Spain was just too organised. Lisandro Martinez is by far the better defender, and Kane was miles clear of Messi at the World Cup.”
