Arsenal believe they will beat Liverpool to the signing of Roméo Lavia, a fresh report has claimed.

Despite Southampton’s relegation, Lavia impressed for the Saints last season, making 34 appearances in all competitions.

And just a year after moving to the south coast from Manchester City, the 19-year-old is one of several players set to leave Southampton this summer.

Indeed, Football Insider have claimed Liverpool have made contact with Lavia’s representatives, while new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is said to be a huge fan of the midfielder.

City, who reportedly have a buy-back clause worth £40million for Lavia which becomes active in 2024, are also said to be interested in re-signing the Southampton starlet.

Yet according to the Guardian, Arsenal are confident they can get a deal done for the Belgian.

Lavia to sign for Arsenal?

Arsenal are said to be targeting Lavia after deciding to not pursue a deal for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.

Mikel Arteta wants to bring in two midfielders this summer, with West Ham captain Declan Rice his priority. The Hammers are said to be holding out for at least £100million, having rejected an opening offer of £80million plus add-ons.

With Brighton likely to ask for a similar fee for Caicedo, Mikel Arteta is said to have turned his attention to Lavia, who is valued at £45million.

And despite Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool’s interest, the Guardian claim there is a “growing belief” Lavia will end up at Arsenal.

The Gunners are expected to make space for midfield arrivals by allowing Granit Xhaka to join Bayer Leverkusen.

Arteta is planning to revamp that area of the pitch to mount another title challenge, with Thomas Partey having suffered a late dip in form last term and Albert Sambi Lokonga having been loaned to Crystal Palace in January.
