Andre Onana told his time at Man Utd is up as club tipped to sign shock replacement

Onana has struggled following his arrival from Inter in 2023 with MUFC linked with a new goalkeeper this summer

It’s no secret that Andre Onana has struggled to transfer his impressive Inter performances to Manchester United following his move in 2023.

Having played a key role in Inter’s progression to the Champions League final, United pulled off a coup as they managed to lure the Cameroon international to Old Trafford.

Onana was a player that then-United head coach Erik ten Hag demanded they signed following the Dutchman’s impressive maiden campaign at the Old Trafford helm.

Ten Hag oversaw a third-placed finish and an EFL Cup win in what should have provided United with the perfect foundation to push on and challenge rivals Manchester City for the title.

David De Gea was instrumental in United’s fine first season under Ten Hag, but the club were happy to see the back of the Spaniard in 2023.

De Gea returned to Old Trafford at the weekend

After a year out of the game, De Gea turned out for Fiorentina last season and shone of the Italian giants.

De Gea returned to Old Trafford at the weekend as United and Fiorentina played out a pre-season 1-1 draw, which the Premier League side ultimately won on penalties.

And with Onana’s two seasons at United littered with high profile errors, the Cameroonian has been told his “time is up” at the club.

United have been linked with a new goalkeeper this summer, notably Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was left out of PSG’s Super Cup squad, while Emiliano Martinez has also been mooted with a potential switch to the club.

Chelsea and Manchester City have also been credited with an interest in the Italy captain but United have been told to return for a former goalkeeper as they look to upgrade in a problem position.

Speaking with BettingLounge.co.uk, former Premier League striker Matt Jansen summed up the sentiment among supporters and their growing frustration with Onana.

United urged to change goalkeeper

“They [United] won’t succeed until they change the goalkeeper, in my opinion. They were trying to go for Emiliano Martinez at Aston Villa, he’d be an improvement. Honestly, you could name half a dozen keepers who would be better than Onana,” Jansen said in a scathing assessment of the current United number one.

“He hasn’t done well. Maybe even David de Gea could come back and still do a job. But it’s clear they need to make a change at the goalkeeper position, it hasn’t worked with Onana, and his time is up. They never should’ve let De Gea go. That was a strange decision, and they’ve paid the price for it.”

A hamstring injury ruled Onana out of United’s pre-season tour of the USA but he’s expected to be fit for their opening game of the Premier League season, where Ruben Amorim’s side face Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday (August 17th).
