Alejandro Garnacho isn't going to the World Cup but plenty of fans think he should be

Garnacho has been making a splash for Manchester United and fans think he should be alongside Lionel Messi in the Argentina squad.

Fans think that Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho should have been in Argentina's World Cup squad, with 'No Garnacho' trending on social media.

Argentina are one of the favourites for the tournament starting in just over a week's time, with Lionel Messi hoping to add the one trophy missing from his cabinet.

If the 35-year-old, who is unlikely to play in the next World Cup in four years in USA, Mexico and Canada, would surely undoubtedly be the greatest of all time if he managed to win it.

Last year he ended his international hoodoo, as he was top goalscorer and Player of the Tournament in Argentina's win in the Copa America.

If Messi is coming towards the end of his international football duty then United youngster Garnacho is one at the very beginning of his.

The forward can play for either Spain or Argentina, but what he does isn't 100% certain just yet, having played for Spain in youth football but already given up a call up to the South American's senior side, without playing a game.

The 18-year-old has started getting himself into Erik ten Hag's plans in recent weeks, and started the Premier League loss to Aston Villa last weekend.

On Thursday night he came on against the same opposition in the Carabao Cup, making a huge impact, including a brilliant assist for Scott McTominay.

That performance obviously caught the eye of many fans, with the announcement of Argentina's squad for the Middle East causing him to trend.

Plenty of those on social media were calling for the teenager to be joining the likes of Messi, Paulo Dybala, Angel di Maria and United teammate Lisandro Martinez.

"Argentina will regret no Garnacho," one fan said.

"No Garnacho is a joke," a second added.

A third suggested that a seven time Ballon d'Or winner was somehow worried about being overshadowed by the youngster, saying, "No Garnacho because Messi is insecure."

A fourth went on a similar theme of the team struggling just because there's a lack of the youngster, adding, "No Garnacho? Argentina won't even get past the group stages."

At this point it's worth pointing out that a lot of the tweets in the trending topic were non United fans criticising United fans for saying Garnacho should be at the World Cup, even though those posts were in shorter supply.

Garnacho's hero at Old Trafford seems to be Cristiano Ronaldo, with the youngster even busting out the Portugal forward's celebration at one point.

At international level he will no doubt stick to Messi during Argentina training, when he is called up to the squad, and that's two pretty decent players to learn from.

He may have missed out on Qatar, but there's plenty of World Cups left for Garnacho...
