Manchester United supporters left stunned at true cost of Alejandro Garnacho

Manchester United supporters have been left shocked at the transfer fee the Red Devils paid Atletico Madrid when signing youngster Alejandro Garnacho in 2020.

The 19-year-old joined United's academy just under three years ago and last campaign saw the youngster breakthrough into the first-team, amassing 33 appearances, with a respectable five goals and five assists.

Last season saw United win the League Cup and reach the FA Cup final where they fell short to bitter rivals Manchester City.

Garnacho became an instant fan favourite at Old Trafford with the teenager's future certainly looking exceptionally bright.

Incredibly, the winger was able to be signed by United for just a £100,000 compensation fee from Atletico Madrid, according to the Athletic.

They claim that scout Gerardo Guzman identified the youngster to the Red Devils' head of youth recruitment David Harrison with director of football John Murtough sanctioning the cut-price deal.

Fans have hailed the club for signing Garnacho, one said: "Biggest bargain ever."

Another added: "This is what we need to do more of rather than continuously wasting £100m on players."

A third reacted: "Well spent. Can’t remember the last time we spent wisely."

Some even joked that the amount it took to buy Garnacho is as much as some of his team-mates' weekly wages.

Garnacho signed a new contract with the club earlier this year and is set to be a key figure in Erik ten Hag's side going forward.

The Argentina international featured in Thursday's 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid, United's first defeat during their tour of the United States.

Goals in each half from Los Blancos new boys Joselu and Jude Bellingham were enough to give Carlo Ancelotti's side the victory.
