Red Bull have made their interest clear in Alex Dunne following McLaren's decision to terminate the young driver's contract.

McLaren confirmed that they have ended the contract of the 19-year-old Irish driver, who had been part of their Driver Development Programme.

Dunne featured in two Formula 1 free practice sessions this season, notably finishing fourth in the first practice session at the Austrian Grand Prix earlier this year.

In addition to his F1 involvement, the rookie has also competed in Formula 2 campaign claiming two feature race victories.

However, he is no longer in the title fight after a mix of technical violations and crashes.

Having joined McLaren in May 2024, Dunne was widely tipped as one of the brightest prospects in motorsport.

He posted on Instagram: "From today I've mutually decided to part ways with the McLaren Driver Development programme.

"I'd like to thank every individual at McLaren that has helped me develop and improve as a driver, to have my first opportunity to drive an F1 car followed by two FP1 sessions is something I'll always hold very close to my heart, I wish them all the best for the future.

"Thank you Papaya family."

McLaren also released a statement adding: "It has been a pleasure to work with Alex over the last year and to contribute to his growth as a driver.

"We wish Alex all the best for his career going forward."

Dunne's departure has already sparked debate over the next step in his fledgling career.

One team expected to show interest is Red Bull, although the Irishman would be more likely to join their junior team, Racing Bulls.

GPblog quoted Red Bull's motorsport advisor Helmut Marko: "We are talking with all fast drivers, and he [Dunne] is fast."

Red Bull's F1 seats for next season are the subject of growing speculation.

Despite rumours linking him with Mercedes, four-time world champion Max Verstappen has recommitted to the team.

The second seat however remains uncertain.

Yuki Tsunoda has struggled to deliver consistent results, while rookie Isack Hadjar, who claimed his first podium finish in Austria, is considered a leading candidate.

Liam Lawson has also shown promise, finishing fifth at the most recent Azerbaijan GP.

Formula 1 now heads to Singapore for the next race weekend.

With seven races remaining, Verstappen has continued to close the gap on the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Although the Dutchman is currently 69 points behind Piastri in the drivers' championship, he will be eager to retain his title and keep the pressure on his rivals.
