Oscar Piastri has secret 'Lando Norris clause' in new McLaren deal as contract details 'leaked'

Oscar Piastri has committed his long-term future to McLaren.

Oscar Piastri has a 'Lando Norris clause' in his new McLaren deal as details of his contract have emerged.

Piastri, who started racing for the Formula 1 team in 2023 having signed the previous year, penned a new contract with McLaren last month.

The contract announcement means the Australian driver and colleague Norris will be teammates at McLaren for the next three seasons.

On signing a new deal, Piastri said: "It's a great feeling knowing that I'm part of McLaren's long-term vision. The team had the belief in me when we signed in 2022, and the journey we've gone on over the past two seasons to help return McLaren to the very top of the sport has been incredible."

According to The Daily Mail, Piastri's new deal is worth a staggering £20 million per season, with the arrangement set to last 'until the end of the decade'.

His previous deal is understood to have netted him around £16.9 per season, with his new contract said to contain so-called 'accumulator clauses', putting him in line to receive significant bonus payments in the event of success on the track.

As for Norris, he is believed to earn around £27 million per year after signing his latest deal in January 2024.

What's more, Piastri is 'protected' from teammate Norris in his challenge for the 2025 F1 world championship.

That's according to Jacques Villeneuve, who claims a clause in the 24-year-old's deal forbids McLaren from giving priority in a race to the 25-year-old Brit.

Villeneuve, who won the 1997 F1 title, revealed: "They cannot give Lando priority over Oscar because of the contract. He has a contract that protects him.

"As long as both drivers can win the championship, there won't be team orders unless there's something significantly big for the constructors' title or if one of them is having an issue in a race like last year."

Piastri leads the F1 world championship after winning last weekend's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. This season, he has won the Chinese Grand Prix and Bahrain Grand Prix.
