FIA Reject Oscar Piastri Demand Ahead of Qatar GP After Official Meeting

A meeting between F1 drivers and the FIA took place this week.

Oscar Piastri has reportedly had his demands rejected by Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, after an official meeting.

Last weekend, Piastri had an evening to forget as he was disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix alongside his McLaren teammate Lando Norris.

The disqualification came after both McLaren cars were deemed illegal following the race due to excessive skid block wear.

Ahead of this weekend's Qatar Grand Prix, Piastri is level on points with Max Verstappen and both drivers are 24 points behind championship leader Norris.

Prior to being disqualified, Piastri was hit by Visa Cash App Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson at Turn 1, but the New Zealander managed to avoid any punishment from the stewards.

Speaking about the move, Piastri said: "Ambitious, that's for sure. But apparently okay.

"So, obviously, I think we'll probably be talking about that one next week in our meeting. But that made things tough and a few more difficult moments..."

Earlier in the week, Piastri urged the FIA to make some tweaks to the sport's regulations, with a meeting scheduled between drivers and F1's governing body.

The Australian said: "Clearly, there's some tweaking that needs to be done, because I think the balance and potentially people gaming the rules a little bit — there's been a few incidents that I don't think are really what we want to see in racing.

"So I'm sure we'll discuss it and be better as a sport, moving forward."

On Friday, it was reported that following the meeting, no changes will be made for the remaining races of the 2025 season.

Taking to social media, F1 journalist Adam Cooper said: "There are no changes for the last two races after the Thursday night meeting, but the @fia highlights the 'key takeaways and general preferences expressed by the drivers'."

The key points include:

  • A stronger emphasis on respect for yellow flags and discussion of potential additional concepts to further enhance safety.
  • A clear preference for hearings to be held after the race when stewards believe not all relevant elements may be available during live running.
  • A shared view that guidelines cannot cover every scenario, underlining the importance of having an experienced Driver Steward on each panel.
  • Blue flags, including potential additions to the DSGs to clarify expected behaviour from lapped cars.

It has also been claimed that the FIA used five racing incidents from this season as case studies during the meeting, including Piastri's collision with Kimi Antonelli in Brazil.
