Mercedes have reportedly held 'initial talks' with a shock driver as the uncertainty surrounding George Russell's future refuses to go away.
It has been a fine start to the 2025 Formula 1 season for Mercedes as they sit second behind runaway leaders McLaren in the constructors' standings.
Meanwhile, Russell is fourth in the driver's championship behind the likes of Max Verstappen, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri after finishing on the podium in four of the six races so far this campaign.
Despite his positive start to 2025, Russell's future remains a hot topic as his Mercedes contract is set to expire at the end of the year.

It has now been claimed that Mercedes have held initial talks with Sergio Perez, who could be Russell's replacement.
As reported by Motorsport, there could be a scenario where Russell moves to Red Bull to replace Verstappen.
It has been suggested that if Verstappen decides to join Aston Martin ahead of Mercedes, Toto Wolff would have to be creative to find a driver to partner Kimi Antonelli.
With Wolff set to build his team around youngster Antonelli, it has been suggested that Mercedes have held talks with Perez, with the team boss said to be impressed with the Mexican's 'contribution to car development and as well as his team play'.

Perez has been without a team since being dropped by Red Bull at the end of the 2024 season. The 35-year-old has since been linked with a return to F1, with the likes of Alpine and Cadillac interested.
Last month, it was reported that Red Bull are interested in Russell as a potential replacement for Verstappen.
The Dutchman has been strongly linked with a move away from the Milton Keynes-based team due to their recent struggles.

According to The Race, talks have already taken place between Red Bull chief Christian Horner and the Mercedes driver.
The report states: "Sources suggest that Russell and Red Bull team principal Christian Horner have had some informal chats over recent weeks, so are aware of each other's situations even if things have not advanced to full-on talks about a race deal.
"A Red Bull move to go for Russell if it knows it is going to lose its star driver could be especially intriguing if Verstappen then does not go for Mercedes - but instead chooses Aston Martin or a year on the sidelines."
