Max Verstappen has agreed with a controversial claim about the Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri crash during the Canadian Grand Prix.
A dramatic race in Montreal saw Mercedes star George Russell come away with his first race win of the 2025 season ahead of rival Verstappen at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Although the late tension between Red Bull and Mercedes undoubtedly caused a massive stir, the biggest moment of the race came just minutes earlier as McLaren teammates Norris and Piastri collided, ending the British driver's race.

In the final laps of the race, Norris began closing in on his teammate who was running in P4, but got too eager and went for an optimistic overtake, causing him to hit into the wall and putting an end to his race.
After the race, Russell, Verstappen and third-place finisher Kimi Antonelli were shown footage of the controversial crash, and their reactions have got fans on social media.

While watching the footage back, both Russell and Verstappen compared the moment to Lewis Hamilton crashed with teammate Jenson Button while driving for McLaren in the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix.

Like Norris, Hamilton attempted a difficult overtake on the inside of his teammate, but found himself hitting into the wall, ruining his race.
"That's literally like Lewis and Button," Russell claimed as he watched the crash between Norris and Piastri.
"Yes! in 2011," replied Verstappen.
The pair then gave their verdict on the moment, with Russell adding: "There was not really a gap there, was there?"

While Verstappen claimed things could have been a lot worse, saying: "No, luckily they put that barrier there, otherwise...."

Reacting to the claim on X, one fan wrote: "Yeah, there wasn't room in 2011 either. Lewis wasn't entitled to the racing line / room just as much as lando wasn't. Was always going to end badly."
However, one disagreed, writing: "Nah it was not exactly the same. In that race Hamilton had actually gotten partially alongside Button and Button squeezed into him. Norris just ran into the back of Oscar without any space there."

While another joked: "The great Ayrton Senna once said, 'If you do not go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver, but if you go for a gap that does not exist, you are Lando Norris.'"
