Lando Norris was handed a further punishment by the stewards after his crash at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Norris, 25, started from P7 following a disappointing qualifying session on Saturday afternoon.

Towards the latter stages of the race, the Brit was on the charge as he closed in on his teammate, Oscar Piastri, who was running in P4.

However, with three laps to go, Norris' hopes of finishing on the podium went up in smoke as he crashed on the run down to the first corner.

In an attempt to pass Piastri, Norris went down the inside on the start/finish straight but ended up losing his front wing before colliding with the barriers.

As a result, Norris was forced to retire from the Grand Prix and lost further ground in the race to become Formula 1 world champion.

After finishing in P4, Piastri now leads Norris by 22 points in the standings.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen has managed to close the gap to Norris to just 21 points.

After the race, it was confirmed that Norris was handed a penalty for the incident.

According to an official document released by the sport's governing body, the FIA, Norris 'attempted to move to the left of Car 81 but there was no space'.

Despite his retirement, a five-second time penalty was handed to Norris.

The document added: "While [Norris] sustained damage and retired from the race (but was nonetheless classified in the results), [Piastri] was not damaged. The Stewards determined that [Norris] was solely to blame for the collision.

"Because the collision had no immediate and obvious sporting consequence, we imposed a five-second post-race time penalty on [Norris]."

However, the penalty will not impact Norris any further, as he was classified in 18th after completing more than 90% of the race.

As reported by Planet F1, who stated: "The time penalty does not convert into a grid penalty (For the next Grand Prix) as would have been the case had the British driver not been classified."

Speaking about the incident, Norris said: "No one to blame but myself, so I apologise to the whole team and to Oscar as well for attempting something probably a bit too silly.

"Glad I didn't ruin his race. In the end apologies to the team."
