Jenson Button has hit back at Ferrari executive chairman John Elkann after comments made about Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

Last weekend, Ferrari endured a disastrous Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos as both drivers failed to finish the race.

Leclerc saw his race come to an abrupt end on Lap 6 after being the unlucky victim of Oscar Piastri and Kimi Antonelli's coming together.

The Australian, who ultimately received a 10-second penalty, locked up going into Turn 1, hitting Antonelli, who then made contact with Leclerc, causing the SF-25 to break its suspension.

Meanwhile, Hamilton suffered damage to his front wing and the floor after making contact with Carlos Sainz and Franco Colapinto. The 40-year-old was eventually told to retire the car on Lap 39.

Following the dismal Grand Prix weekend in Sao Paulo, Ferrari chairman Elkann stunned the Formula 1 world by slamming both drivers.

He said at an event on Monday: "Brazil was a huge disappointment. In Formula 1, we have mechanics who are always first in performing pit stops. The engineers work to improve the car. The rest is not up to par.

"We have drivers who need to focus on driving, talk less, and we have important races ahead of us, and it is not impossible to finish second. This is the most important message coming out of Bahrain: when Ferrari is a team, we win. Ferrari wins when it is united, as the WEC results have shown us. When everyone is together, great things can be achieved."

Reacting to Elkann's strong words, ex-F1 driver and 2009 world champion Button issued a six-word response.

He wrote: "Maybe John should lead by example."

Meanwhile, both drivers also issued statements following Elkann's public callout.

Leclerc wrote: "A very difficult weekend in Sao Paulo. Disappointing to come back home with nearly no points at all for the team in what is a critical moment of the season to fight for the 2nd place in the Constructors' Championship.

"It's uphill from now and it's clear that only unity can help us turn that situation around in the last three races. We'll give it all, as always."

Hamilton stated: "I back my team. I back myself. I will not give up. Not now, not then, not ever. Thank you, Brazil, always."

F1 returns next weekend with the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
