Former darts world champion Peter Wright has explained why he broke down during his second-round match against Wesley Plaisier.

On Tuesday night, 'Snakebite' Wright opened his tournament at the Alexandra Palace, London against Dutchman Plaisier, who beat Japan's Ryusei Azemoto in the first round.

Despite being in poor form throughout 2024, Wright came away 3-1 winner as he secured his place in round three.

Speaking after the match, the 54-year-old revealed why he broke down after a song came on during a break in play.

He said: "I've missed you all, all these interviews when you win games I've really missed it. I was in control and then I just lost it.

"It was down to the guys who play music at the break, they were playing Angels by Robbie Williams and I love the song."

Wright continued: "I heard my daughter singing that for the first time (in my head) and I just lost it. But I eventually got over the line and that's all that counts."

He did not specify which of his two daughters he was speaking about, having raised Naomi and Jessie, as well as his son Tristan with his wife Joanne.

Wright was not the first person to be overcome with emotions during the World Championship after fellow Scotsman Cameron Menzies was visibly upset during the closing stages of his first round defeat against American Leonard Gates.

The Scotsman then praised the Ally Pally crowd for getting him through what was a tough match.

Wright said: "For some reason they were singing Scotland get battered everywhere they go, but they were behind me.

"They wanted me to win for some reason. It did spur me on."

In the next round, Wright will take on another Dutchman, this time in the shape of the in-form Jermaine Wattimena.

Speaking about the mouth-watering matchup, Wright added: "Hopefully class is permanent, form is temporary. Hopefully his (Wattimena's) form is temporary and after Christmas he comes back and plays rubbish.

"But it's nice to see Jermaine play some fantastic darts, I'm happy for him. I've got to step up loads to compete with him."

He continued: "People say, ‘you should be retiring, you should be going to the old gits' thing’.

"I’m not ready for that yet. I’m ready to upset Luke Littler. I’m here to upset Luke Humphries."
