Australia batsman Steve Smith recently revealed the main goals he wants to achieve in cricket before finally retiring from all formats of the sport.
Smith, 36, retired from one-day international cricket following the ICC Champions Trophy in March of 2025, but remains an important part of the Australia Test side that beat England 4-1 in the 2025/26 Ashes.
The 36-year-old played in four of the five Tests, averaging 57.20 with the bat while also filling in as captain for the injured Pat Cummins, who played just one match – the third Test in Adelaide.
Since the end of the series, Smith has also been in T20 action for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League and registered a 42-ball 100 in the side’s win over Sydney Thunder on January 16.

And while Smith remains one of the best batsmen in world cricket, he is no doubt in the twilight of what has been an illustrious career.

At 36, having won the World Test Championship, Ashes, T20 World Cup, and 50-over World Cup, some fans may wonder what else is left for the Kogarah-born player to achieve?
Well, Smith has ambitions of featuring at the 2028 LA Olympics. The sport will make a return to the Games after a 128-year absence in the form of T20 matches.

Men’s and women’s competitions will take place between July 20 and 29, 2028, with six teams consisting of 15-player squads set to compete for gold, silver, and bronze.
Speaking to 7News on January 14, Smith explained how his decision to take a step away from the 50-over game was because he wanted to focus on T20 cricket and making the Olympic team while also playing Test cricket.
“You know I’d love to be a part of an Olympics, that’d be pretty cool. So that’s certainly a goal of mine,” Smith revealed.
When the next Olympics start, Smith will be 39 years old. The New South Wales batter also harbours ambitions of playing in the next Ashes, which will take place in England in the summer of 2027.

Australia have not won an Ashes away from home since 2001.
“I would have loved to have won in India and England, that’s the two big away tours for us as Australians,” Smith explained.
“Whether or not I’ll be there, as I’ve said numerous times, I’m not sure. I’ll take it day by day and game by game.

“One day I might wake up and say I’ve had enough, but we’ll see.”
Smith has previously featured in 67 T20 matches for Australia, scoring 1094 runs at an average of 24.86.
Whether Smith retires before then is unclear, but he appears to be loving cricket at the moment.
