Manchester City have received a major boost at the end of the summer transfer window.

Recent reports have revealed that want-away midfielder Bernardo Silva will be remaining at the club for the 2022/23 season.

The 28 year-old has become a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s back-to-back Premier League title winning squad and thanks to his unrelenting engine and tricky footwork, the Portugal international has cemented himself as one of the world’s best.

However, it has been widely reported that Bernardo Silva has been keen on a move away from Manchester City, hoping to play his football closer to home in La Liga.

As a result, FC Barcelona jumped to the front of the line to sign the midfielder.

With the transfer market severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, no team in Spain was able to present Manchester City with a financial package bulky enough to secure Bernardo Silva’s services in the summer of 2021.

This time around however, it has looked increasingly likely that Silva would join Barcelona, as the La Liga club was very public with their confidence in signing the City star.

That all changed in recent days, when information provided by Spanish journalist Luis Rojo revealed that it was now ‘too late in the window’ for Manchester City to entertain any offers for Bernardo Silva.

To compound that news, there has even been rumblings that the Etihad club are in discussions with Bernardo Silva over a contract extension, that could see him extend his stay in Manchester beyond the summer of 2026.

Next week, Manchester City will face off with Barcelona in a mid-season charity friendly at the Camp Nou, and speaking to El matí de Catalunya Ràdio, Pep Guardiola sent a shot over the bow of his former club.

"You (Barcelona) will see him (Bernardo Silva) play on Wednesday, won't you!

"And what is certain is that he will play with us. With Man City!” Guardiola said, perhaps mocking the Spanish club’s confidence in the early part of the window.

With the news received that City will be holding on to Bernardo Silva, the Premier League champions to be just about done with their transfer dealings this summer.

While key players in the dressing room such as Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, and Oleksandr Zinchenko have all departed the club, their shoes have been filled with quality signings such as Kalvin Phillips, Erling Haaland, and Julian Alvarez.

Thanks to their successful window so far, City have started the Premier League season with two wins from two games, and will look to extend that streak at St. James Park against Newcastle United on Sunday.
