Why boxers are medically suspended after fights and how long suspensions last
Medical suspensions are a key factor of professional boxing as commissions ensure that fighters, but how long do they last and when do they apply?
On Saturday night, reigning WBO world heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois will defend his belt against compatriot Fabio Wardley on Saturday 17 October at the O2 Arena.
The bout is a rematch of the pair's brutal 11-round clash earlier this year, after which Wardley was automatically medically suspended having been finished via TKO by referee stoppage.

What is a boxing medical suspension?
Although some may feel that banning a fighter after a loss or even after a big win seems harsh, it's important to note that it is a health measure, not a a disciplinary punishment.

Boxing medical suspensions are enforced to ensure fighters are able to recover properly before stepping back into the ring.
Typically, these suspensions relate to boxers who have lost via knockout or suffered another injury in the ring, but it can also a standard concussion protocol after a tough back and forth bout.
Depending on the nature of the injury/details of the fight and whichever governing body oversaw the bout, the suspensions can be different durations and have different conditions, such as a ban from sparring as well as competing.
In the UK, fights sanctioned under the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) typically result in 28 or 45 days suspensions after a knockout or stoppage, although the ringside senior medical officer can impose a longer suspension.
In this period, the boxer cannot compete under any circumstances, and sparring is also banned unless the Board gives them written permission stating otherwise.
The fighter cannot return to ro the ring until they are medically certified fit , even after the suspension has ended.
Why are boxers medically suspended after fights?
Head trauma and concussion
Without a doubt, the biggest concern in boxing relates to head trauma as, given the nature of the sport, concussions are very common, particularly after a knockout.
Throughout the history of boxing there are plenty of stories of fighters not being fully aware of where they were even hours after a fight has ended, with it clear that weeks are needed to fully recover from a big bout.
Perhaps most famously in the UK, Chris Eubank Sr’s fight with Michael Watson in September 1991 demonstrates just how important it is to take head trauma and concussion protocols seriously.
During the world-title rematch, Watson suffered a brain haemorrhage and lost lost consciousness in his corner after the final-round stoppage, with the injury causing him permanent brain damage.
Although the injury did not relate to a boxer returning too soon from suspension, the BBBofC’s arrangements for immediate ringside resuscitation were deemed to be inadequate, showing how important it is to take this matter seriously.
Therefore, under BBBofC regulation 5.8, a boxer stopped by the referee, retired from a contest or counted out will automatically be suspended for at least 28 or 45 clear days, at the senior medical officer’s discretion.
It's important to note, this excludes disqualifications.
Additionally, the Association of Ringside Physicians recommends assessing both fighters immediately after the fight before later repeating the assessment in a quieter setting.
Cuts fractures and other injuries
It's not just head trauma and concussive injuries that can lead to suspensions, as lacerations, eye injuries, facial or hand fractures and other injuries can also leave a fighter unfit to compete.
BBBofC regulation 5.8 also allows a suspension to be handed out when a doctor finds a boxer unfit through injury or another medical reason.
A universal suspension length does not apply as further examinations, scans or assessments are needed to determine the extent of the injury, and therefore the suspension needed to ensure the proper recovery.
Routine recovery after a bout
Alongside the more lengthy suspensions, BBBofC regulation 5.4 is in place to prevent boxers from competing within six clear days of their previous contest, regardless of the outcome.
Even if a boxer secures a dominant win, repeated concussive blows throughout the fight could mean that recovery is still needed.

How long is a boxing medical suspension?
The length of a medical suspension depends on the regulator, the outcome of the fight and any medical-clearance requirements.
- Any BBBoC contest: For any fight sanctioned by the British Boxing Board of Control, a boxer compete again within six clear days of their previous fight. This is a routine minimum interval, and not technically a medical suspension. There is, however, a provision in Rule 5.4(b) for Board-approved limited-duration tournaments.
- Fighters stopped, retired or counted out under BBBoC rules: The boxer's licence is immediately suspended for 28 or 45 clear days, or longer, at the senior medical officer’s discretion
- Declared medically unfit under BBBoC rules: The boxer must complete the imposed suspension and receive relevant medical certification before returning to the ring. Any medical certificate must reach the Board at least 36 hours before the next contest.
- ABC minimum after a KO or TKO from head blows: The Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports (ABC) impose restrictions of 45 days without competition and 30 days without sparring for anyone knocked out by head blows. A knockout involving a loss of consciousness also requires brain imaging and neurologist clearance. It's important to note this is an ABC standard, not a BBBofC rule.
- Other commissions or diagnosed injuries: Not all commissions or injuries carry the same suspensions, a regulator may impose a specified period because of an injury, suspected injury or its rules following a particular result. These are not standard lengths that apply everywhere. For example, a commission could impost suspensions of 60, 90 or 180 days, with some also imposing indefinite suspensions or one until the fighter is medically cleared.
Can a winner be medically suspended?
Put simply, yes, a winner can be medically suspended immediately after a fight.
Following the victory, both the ringside doctor and regulator assess both of the boxer’s health and decide on the needed recovery, regardless of who won or lost.
Just because someone has won the fight doesn't mean that they've not been injured during the fight, or at the very least suffered several concussive blows.
The BBBofC explicitly states that its medical officers can impose or extend a suspension, regardless of if whether a boxer has won, lost or drawn.
For example, after beating rival Conor Benn in their first bout on 26 April 2025, Chris Eubank Jr was suspended simply due to the brutal nature of the bout.
Post fight, BBBofC general secretary Robert Smith confirmed: “They’re both medically suspended at the moment because it was such a tough fight.”
Although he didn't confirm how long the suspensions would last, Smith added that both needed medical clearance to box again.
What does indefinitely suspended or until cleared mean?
If a boxer is handed an indefinite suspension, this means that there is no fixed amount of time that must pass before their return.
It does not mean that the boxer is banned forever, it typically means that they cannot return until specified medical evidence is provided.
That might be a test, scan, examination or specialist clearance.
Meanwhile other suspensions may list a duration while also adding 'until cleared' at the end.
This means that the boxer can come back either at the end of the period listed or maybe earlier if the regulator accepts the required evidence, with a separate mandatory minimum rest period still applying.
Can a boxer train or spar while suspended?
In general, no, but the decision depends on the rules and suspension being followed.
- BBBofC: under Rule 5.11, a boxer cannot bring in a suspended boxer as a sparring partner without the Board’s prior written permission. That being said, the suspended boxer can still do other forms of gym training.
- ABC published minimum standard: a KO or TKO from head blows carries a suspension of 45 days without competition and an additional 30 days without sparring.
- Other regulators or individual orders: Other boxing regulators may include suspensions to cover activity more broadly. Whether conditioning or other non-contact training is permitted must be checked against the actual order and medical instruction
Who decides when a boxer can return?
This decision comes dow to the relevant board or commission looking after the fight.
While doctors and specialists can provide the necessary examinations, results and fitness certificates, it is the boards and commissions that decide the clearance route.
Under BBBofC Rule 5.8, the suspension period must be completed and the boxer certified fit before they return to the ring. Additionally, the board must received a written fitness certificate at least 36 hours before their fight.
Meanwhile the ABC published minimum standard expressly states that only the commission which suspended the boxer can reinstate them under that system.
Medical suspension vs disciplinary ban
A common misconception when a boxer is suspended post-fight is that it is a disciplinary ban.
However, a medical suspension is in place to protect a fighter's health and to ensure they get the proper recovery before returning the ring.
A disciplinary ban however, can be imposted for various different reasons, including doping, licensing, conduct or rule breaches.
These bans may require a hearing, completion of a sanction or other conditions before a return, unlike a medical suspension which simply needs evidence of proper recovery.
