A teenager has stunned the athletics world by breaking the U18 men’s 800m world record at the USA Track and Field Championships – a performance that has been described as "the most impressive athletic feat in history".

Cooper Lutkenhaus, 16, will become the youngest athlete in history to represent Team USA at the worlds after he qualified for September’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Nobody expected Lutkenhaus to challenge for a medal on Sunday but in an unprecedented display from the youngster, Lutkenhaus claimed silver following a remarkable time of 1:42.27, which was more than three seconds faster than his personal best.

In fact, the American became the sixth-fastest runner in the world this year as he topped the global U20 rankings.

To put the achievement into further perspective, the previous U18 record – set by Ethiopia’s Mohammed Aman in 2011 – was 1:43.37, and the closest anyone has come to challenging that time was 2024 Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi, who ran 1:43.76 in 2021.

Lutkenhaus's performance has been lauded by many, including Athletics performance coach Steve Magness, who was in a state of disbelief after learning of the teenager's record-breaking feat.

"A 16 year old high schooler just ran 1:42.27. I have no words," he said. "This is the most impressive athletic feat in history. There are no superlatives. His performance makes high school Lebron look like nobody. Cooper Lutkenhaus take a bow."

Magness, who has coached some of the best distance runners in the world, wasn't done there.

"I don't know how to explain it," he continued. "It is the most mind blowing HS performance in history. Any high school phenom in history you can think of? This kid is better. I never thought we'd supplant Jim Ryun as the HS runner GOAT, but a sophomore in HS just did. Insanity."

He added: "Think of it like this: He was in a field with 3 different world champions. He beat all but 1, who barely held him off by a tenth of a second It's pure insanity. Better than Jim Ryun, Alan Webb, Sydney, Alyson Felix, whoever your comparative is...and he's a sophomore in HS!"

American college athletics commentator Andrew Sweeney also gave his take on Lutkenhaus' remarkable feat.

“I say this with zero exaggeration or embellishment, this is the most incredible thing I’ve ever witnessed in sports history," he said. “Lutkenhaus running one of the greatest 800m races in history at just 16yrs old out of NOWHERE… I truly cannot fathom what I just saw. In absolute shock.”
