It was defeat in the opening game of their 2022/23 European campaign. They suffered a shock loss to Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia last week as Mislav Orsic’s first half strike sealed a 1-0 win and all three points for the hosts.

Thomas Tuchel’s time at Chelsea was also over. That was his final game in charge after Todd Boehly and Co opted to dismiss the 49-year-old last Wednesday

Chelsea appointed Graham Potter and he will take charge against FC Salzburg on Wednesday in the capital.

He will be without Edouard Mendy and N’Golo Kante (hamstring) for the European affair after the pair missed training at Cobham on Tuesday.

"Edou will miss the game, so will NG," admitted Potter.

"Apart from that everybody is fit. Eddie has responded well, but his knee has bothered him for a bit. I don't think it'll be long, but we need to give him some time."

Potter is looking forward to his first ever Champions League game as he heads to Stamford Bridge as home manager for the first time.

He added: "This is an amazing evening for us, for all of us, we are super excited. At the same time, we have been preparing a team, getting to know the players. It's a fantastic opportunity.

"Wherever we start, it's a heck of an introduction. With respect to everything that has happened with this football club, demands, wherever we start is brilliant. We start here (in the Champions League)."
