Leandro Trossard's Chelsea transfer plea hands Todd Boehly perfect January signing under Graham Potter amid 2023 contract expiry

Leandro Trossard's Chelsea transfer plea hands Todd Boehly perfect January signing under Graham Potter amid 2023 contract expiry

Leandro Trossard's Chelsea transfer admission has handed Todd Boehly and Graham Potter the perfect January signing.

Brighton and Hove Albion winger Leandro Trossard has recently declared his intent to move to Chelsea and this admission may have handed Todd Boehly the perfect January signing for new boss Graham Potter.

The Belgian shares a strong relationship with Potter, who brought him to the Premier League during his time on the south coast.

Trossard recently admitted that he would like to join the 47-year-old and make a move to Stamford Bridge if the opportunity arose.

Speaking to the press about Potter, he said: " Our coach did leave for Chelsea now but speculations about me following him make no sense.

“If the opportunity arises, I want to go. But I want to play and not sit on the bench.”

With Chelsea previously linked with attacking reinforcements in the summer window, they missed out on Rafael Leao, Anthony Gordon and Raphinha.

While Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang arrived, Timo Werner, Romelu Lukaku and Callum Hudson-Odoi left in attack.

Sterling was utilised by Potter on the left hand side in the attacking wing-back role, a position that Trossard mastered under the Englishman.

Chelsea could re-enter the market for Gordon in January, but would face competition from Tottenham Hotspur if reports are to be believed.

It was thought that the Everton winger would have been utilised at wing-back if he joined Chelsea, but with several bids rejected it was clear that the Blues were unwilling to meet his valuation.

Therefore, an alternative could be targeted and even arrive in January in Trossard.

His public admission will no doubt concern Brighton, with Chelsea already acting to take Marc Cucurella and Potter.

Trossard is a sensible move for Chelsea, with Potter having worked with the player and sharing a strong relationship, while if Cucurella is to be utilised on the left of a back three, bringing in the player that played ahead of him just makes sense.

Furthermore, Trossard is out of contract at the end of the season, potentially making him available for a cut-price in January.

The move would allow Sterling to move further forward and play in attack where he looks most dangerous.

Trossard could also play further forward, allowing Chelsea to use both Ben Chilwell and Cucurella behind the Belgian.

He has gained plaudits for his displays at Brighton in recent years, becoming a regular in the Belgium national team.

Trossard admitted that he would only move for first team football but could he look to follow in the footsteps of Eden Hazard and join Chelsea?

The strong relationship between Boehly and Brighton's board will no doubt help and a deal would likely be concluded swiftly, or else Brighton would risk losing their star on a free when his contract expires.

What better way to help Potter in his first transfer window than to bring in a player that he knows well, has coached before and has shown that he has the quality to make it at a big club the Premier League.

Time will tell as to whether Potter and the Chelsea recruitment team will look to act on Trossard's recent admittance but he could prove to be a smart acquisition in the winter transfer window.
