Why Jurgen Klopp CANNOT Moan When Chelsea Complete £200 Million Rebuild Following Darwin Nunez Signing

Why Jurgen Klopp CANNOT Moan When Chelsea Complete £200 Million Rebuild Following Darwin Nunez Signing

Chelsea may be criticised for splashing the cash this summer, but Jurgen Klopp needs to stay quiet.

Chelsea are set for a busy summer following the arrival of the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital consortium after they completed their £4.25 billion takeover of the club from Roman Abramovich on 30 May.

Boehly has started to hold meeting with Tuchel over their transfer strategy this summer which has seen the American billionaire promise to do everything he can to land the signings the Blues head coach wants, which he has been given total control over.

A budget of around £200 million is expected to be provided to make new signings as the look to rebuild the squad following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

There is plenty of work to do for Chelsea ahead of the 2022/23 season which is less than two months away, with a title challenge eyed in the hope of dethroning Manchester City next term.

With signings comes spending. That will be the case for Chelsea and, like in the past, they will likely be scrutinised in some way despite needing to improve the team to compete with City and Liverpool.

City have just signed Erling Haaland, while Liverpool are on the verge of completing an £85 million deal, including add-ons, for Benfica's Darwin Nunez.

With Nunez' arrival at Anfield, it brings Klopp's comments about Manchester United's signing of Paul Pogba from 2016 back into play after the then-world record transfer of £89 million.

He said: "If you bring one player in for £100 million and he gets injured, then it all goes through the chimney. The day that this is football, I'm not in a job anymore, because the game is about playing together.

"Other clubs can go out and spend more money and collect top players. I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I could spend that money."

Three years later in 2019, Klopp accepted the market may have changed which saw Liverpool need to splash the cash to keep up with their rivals, but stuck by his initial comments.

"The market has changed more than I expected, but I stand by what I said," he told German broadcaster ZDF.

"Maybe things were lost in translation but my point was, if we reach a point where football is solely about money and not football, then I'm leaving; and I still feel the same way about it.

"Liverpool is an ambitious club and if we didn't spend the same amount of money as others, we wouldn't be able to compete. Everybody's splashing the cash, so we have to do the same."

Not that Tuchel and Chelsea would be bothered if Klopp were to make any swipes at them if they landed a couple of big signings this summer. Jules Kounde, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus are three names who have been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge, along with out of contract Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele.

Chelsea have yet to start their summer spending but it's likely that once one deal is confirmed that a few more will follow as Tuchel looks to complete his rebuild in time for the opening day of the 2022/23 Premier League season at the beginning of August.
