Graham Potter: It's my job to help Chelsea get the results

Graham Potter's first match as Chelsea boss ended in a draw.

Chelsea boss Graham Potter has revealed it is up to him to ensure the side get results despite his long-term assurances at the club.

The 47-year-old’s first game as the Blues’ new boss came on Wednesday night, a 1-1 draw against FC Salzburg in their second match of the Champions League.

Raheem Sterling gave Chelsea the lead, but Noah Okafor equalised with just 15 minutes remaining.

Despite late attempts from the hosts to find a late winner, the Austrian side held on to secure a point on their travels to west London.

Potter’s side now sit bottom of Group E in the competition, and face a huge task of trying to qualify for the knockout stages.

It was also the side’s last game until the start of October, with their Premier League clash against Liverpool being postponed due to the policing surrounding the funeral of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II on Monday.

After the draw against Salzburg, Potter spoke to the media via football.london and revealed his belief that it is up to him to ensure Chelsea get the results they want.

"I've been very positive with the players, their response, attitude, intelligence,” said the head coach.

“They are top players and are working hard for each other.

“There is a nice spirit in the group, but they are disappointed because results haven't gone as well as they'd like, which is normal, and you can feel that disappointment and frustration.

"But it's my job to help them get the results they want, that we all want. Today is not the best start in terms of points for us but in terms of how we acted on the pitch as a group, lots of positives."

Potter was handed a five-year contract when he joined Chelsea last week.

Such a deal shows signs of a long-term project at the club, with Thomas Tuchel departing after just 19 months.

He also commented on the change of culture at the club, especially given a new head coach appointment and the early months of the new ownership.

"We still understand where we are.

“We understand the demands of this football club, and as I said, I believe in an environment, culture and helping people improve, but we also know we have to win as well and be competitive, so nothing changes in that regard.

"We are the start of a process with a group of staff and a group of players.

“I can only comment on the response we had, which has been really good, and I am looking forward to working, making this team competitive, and one the supporters are proud of."
