Ben Chilwell 'disappointed and upset' after England World Cup chances dented following hamstring injury

Ben Chilwell 'disappointed and upset' after England World Cup chances dented following hamstring injury

The defender was forced off in the closing moments against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday night.

Graham Potter has revealed that Ben Chilwell is ‘disappointed and upset’ after he picked up a hamstring injury against Dinamo Zagreb that could dent his World Cup chances.

In the closing moments of Chelsea’s Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge, the left-back pulled up with an injury, clenching the back of his leg.

After such a positive night, it was a worrying end for Blues fans and Chilwell, who limped off the field due to a hamstring injury.

He had put in a really good performance in what was a good team win for the west London outfit as they extended their unbeaten streak in the Champions League.

With the World Cup in Qatar just around the corner, Gareth Southgate is set to name his 26-man squad sometime next week.

England’s first game comes against Iran on the 21st of November, but it looks as though they could be without the 25-year-old who’s World Cup dream may be over.

Last season, Chilwell had to battle an ACL injury and missed a significant part of the season, despite starting slowly, he has regained his form.

He had put himself in a good spot to be called up for the squad, but now his chances are not looking at all likely.

While hopefully the injury won’t be a lengthy one for the defender, he joins the likes of Reece James, Wesley Fofana and N’Golo Kante on the sidelines.

The amount of players on the list is starting to creep up at Chelsea, and this injury only adds more problems to deal with.

Chilwell’s teammate for both England and at Stamford Bridge, Mason Mount spoke about what a huge shame the injury is.

He told the official Chelsea website: “We don’t know how bad it is but that tough to watch. We saw his reaction and that never looks good.

“As soon as you feel something and to not even think about the ball, it’s tough.”

He added: “We know what’s coming up, hopefully it’s not too bad and he can be back as soon as possible because we need him as well.”

Speaking after the game, Potter also spoke about the injury and how Chilwell was feeling.

He said: “Not great. Obviously, when he pulls up like that it’s a concern. Obviously we need to scan it but it’s not positive at the moment.

“I spoke to him briefly. He just felt something as he was setting off. He is disappointed and upset.”
