Erik ten Hag has hit back at those who have criticised his emphasis on signing players from the Eredivisie ahead of the Arsenal clash at Old Trafford.

The Dutch manager's focus on recruiting players from the Dutch league for Manchester United has come under criticism, as players who migrate from there to the Premier League historically being very hit or miss.

During the pre-match press conference, players such as Luis Suarez, Robin van Persie and Ruud van Nistelrooy were mentioned as very successful players who joined from the Eredivisie.

But others such as Davy Klaassen were also mentioned – players who have really struggled.

When the question was posed as to what makes Ten Hag confident that he will be able to sign three new players from the Dutch first division, he made the point at their achievements so far.

"Firstly, the players we signed are internationals for their countries. Secondly, they performed really well in the Champions League," Ten Hag retorted.

"And third, when I look at individual skills they are capable of playing high intensity football."

One of those signings has been central defender Lisandro Martinez.

The Argentinian defender has impressed since joining the club, and recently won Manchester United's August player of the Month award.

Martinez was a target of Sunday's opponents Arsenal, however United out bid the London club.

"I wanted him [for his] ball playing but also you see his defending capabilities, his toughness, his positioning, his anticipating, the togetherness," Erik ten Hag explained when questioned on why he signed the defender.

"I know what he is able [to do], that is the base. He is doing well, but he has to do much better."

Manchester United could climb up to fourth place in the Premier League table with a victory over Arsenal.
