Joanna Jedrzejczyk Suffers Horrific Hematoma On Head After Epic UFC 248 War With Zhang Weili
Joanna Jedrzejczyk was left unrecognisable after sustaining a brutal hematoma to the head during her show-stealing UFC 248 clash with Zhang Weili.
The 32-year-old Polish MMA fighter traded blows with Weili in a memorable clash for the women's strawweight championship on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Weili, 30, managed to retain her championship through a split-decision victory, but that wasn't before she did an unreal amount of punishment on her opponent.
The strawweight champ unloaded a string of powerful shots in the third round and left Jedrzejczyk with an enormous swelling on the side of her forehead.
Both fighters, who put on what many felt as the best women's fight in UFC history, were rushed to hospital after their war inside the octagon.
But Jedrzejczyk did deliver a post-fight interview after her defeat as she tried to conceal her head with the Poland flag.
"You see my swellness, I felt this. She did great. There was something missing, but I felt all the punches you know," she said.
"From the third round, the swellness was bothering me and I felt it was just getting more and more swollen and my head was like going on and off.
"But all good. Congrats, Zhang, and I'm very happy we gave you a good fight."
During the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White waved away any immediate conversation of a rematch as he said the focus was on both fighters to recover first.
"Did you see what those two girls looked like after that fight? They're both in the hospital right now," he explained.
"They did not go to a press conference, they did not talk to press, they both went straight to the hospital.
"They need to go home, take time to heal up and everything else before I even mention a fight with either one of them again."
The UFC chief went on to reveal that he had spoken to both fighters and believes that the pair put on an "incredible fight."
White added: "I did, I talked to both of them, and I was just saying what an incredible fight. I couldn't tell them enough how incredible both of them were."
