Returning boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya has fired back at UFC president Dana White for slamming his proposed comeback.

White did not hold back when he was asked about De La Hoya's return to the ring.

He said: "Cocaine isn't cheap. It's expensive. Gotta make money."

The 47-year-old boxing promoter has since hit back, taking a shot at the UFC as he provided an update on Canelo Alvarez's next fight.

On Twitter, he wrote: "It's a f**king embarrassment that sports-starved fans are flocking to baseball and the UFC, & largely ignoring the greatest sport in the world.

"I have been working tirelessly day and night with our partners at DAZN to get a Canelo fight done ASAP and get our sport back on track."

De La Hoya, meanwhile, recently confirmed he was coming out of retirement, 12 years after his crushing defeat to Manny Pacquiao back in December 2008.

"The rumors are true, and I'm going to start sparring in the next few weeks," he told ESPN.

His comeback, unlike Mike Tyson's, isn't an exhibition but a "real" fight.

He added: "It's a real fight. I miss being in the ring, I love boxing. Boxing is what gave me everything I have today, and I just miss it.

"Look, my last fight with Pacquiao, I weighed in at 145 and obviously that was a shell of myself.

"Look, it's been a long time, yes. But actually my jab feels faster than ever.

"I have to make sure that my conditioning is perfect, my health is good. And that's going to take place in the next few weeks. So we'll see."

Former world champion Amir Khan has called for a showdown with De La Hoya.
