Bruce Buffer would rather see Conor McGregor fight Nate Diaz and complete the trilogy than face a rematch against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The UFC announcer thinks McGregor will be back in action sooner rather than later despite his troubles away from the octagon.

And Buffer, 62, thinks there are some big contests awaiting the Irishman if and when he makes his UFC comeback.

Speaking to Buffer at a PokerStars event in Barcelona, SPORTbible asked him the fights he would love to see made by Dana White.

He said: "I would like to see Conor and Nate have the trilogy.

"Will he get a fight against Khabib? I don't think it's fair for him to fight for the championship straight away. Because he's been out of the octagon for so many years, it would be good to have a great fight leading up to a championship bout based on winning that fight.

"For me it would be Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor the trilogy, and the winner get to face Khabib for the championship."

McGregor was beaten by Diaz at UFC 196 in 2016 before bouncing back to win a close decision at UFC 202 later in the year.

Buffer added: "Honestly, I would also love to see Georges St-Pierre and Conor McGregor go at it.

"It would be a massive fight and a massive payday for both fighters and the UFC and a massive fan favourite fight to watch.

"Conor has got a lot to work on with respect to his brand and his image with the public. In respect to fighting in the UFC - I believe Conor will be back."

The other fight that Buffer would love to see involves 40-year-old heavyweight Daniel Cormier, who is considering retirement from the sport after his defeat by Stipe Miocic.

Cormier was beaten by Jon Jones in 2015 before their controversial rematch two years later was deemed a no contest when the latter failed a doping test.

Buffer said: "I would love to see DC and Jon Jones going at it again at heavyweight.

"I don't see DC even thinking about going down to light heavyweight again.

"I think if Jon wanted to have two belts he would go for the heavyweight title.

"And what better choice in his mind mentally than to go after the man in the heavyweight division that he's already beaten twice?"

SPORTbible were talking to Bruce at PokerStars European Poker Tour Barcelona at Casino Barcelona in Spain.
