'That might be a first...' - Dana White shocked by what he heard immediately after UFC 330 finished

Dana White was left shocked by a surprise retirement announcement made shortly after UFC 330.

The main events saw Islam Makhachev defeat Ian Machado Garry by unanimous decision to defend his welterweight title and secure a historic 17th successive UFC win, while Mackenzie Dern beat Gillian Robertson to successfully defend her strawweight title.

Although much of the reaction was about Makhachev's legacy in the sport, two careers also came to an end in Philadelphia this weekend.

Edson Barboza announced his retirement after he lost his fourth consecutive bout following defeat to Esteban Ribovics. There was little surprise at the 40-year-old's decision to hang up his gloves, though the next retirement announcement shocked White.

Din Thomas retires

Din Thomas confirmed he would retire from cornering rights after he was part of Robertson's team for her unanimous decision defeat to Dern in the co-main event.

The popular UFC analyst announced he would step away from coaching, with the 49-year-old no longer sure he can offer Robertson the support she needs in the role.

“I do have an announcement for you guys,” he said during the UFC 330 Post-Fight Show.

“I told myself I would continue to do this until I took Gillian as far as she could go. I think that might be as far as she can go, and I am officially retiring from cornering fighters tonight.

“It’s a lot of work. It’s a lot of stress. You gotta be there all week. And again, like I’ve been slowly telling you, I don’t cut weight with them. And it’s not fair to them. They need somebody who’s gonna really put that type of work in with them.”

White shocked by Thomas announcement

White is close friends with Thomas, having starred together on screen as part of the 'Lookin' For A Fight' reality web series, in which they scout new fighters for the UFC.

The UFC President was caught off guard when a reporter informed him Thomas had retired from cornering fighters after UFC 330.

“That’s weird. He didn’t say anything to me,” White said.

"I didn’t know about that. I’ve never heard about retiring from cornering. That might be a first. That’s the first I’ve ever heard of it.

"Maybe he’s just tired of the grind. You know, he’s worked with so many fighters over the years. Maybe he’s just burnt out.”
