The first day of the York Dante meeting takes place on the Knavesmire today with some top-class racing to be enjoyed this week, which can be seen on ITV4.

With Classic clues aplenty, this looks sure to prove an informative week and here are Danny Archer's selections for today's action...

Brando aims to be Godfather at York

2:20: York - Erik The Red 12/1 Each Way and Lovell 7/1 Each Way.

Kevin Ryan's Erik The Red doesn't get his head in front all too often but he perpetually runs well here. The five-year-old son of Kendargent was third in this race last year and was arguably unlucky not to win that event as he didn't have the best of runs through. He looks a cracking each-way play. His reappearance at Newcastle was satisfactory and he should stripper fitter here.

Godolphin have been winning a few handicaps recently with horses who have been off the track a long time and four-year-old gelding Lovell was well backed in the King Goerge V Stakes but never showed up. He remains one with the scope to fulfil his potential and he could have a bit more improvement in him.

2:55: York - Udontdodou 7/1 Each Way and Mundatab 7/1 Each Way.

Udontdodou registered a nice victory at Chelmsford on seasonal debut and returning to turf, he can make his presence felt in this ultra-competitive event. Mundatab has run with credit in defeat twice this term and with his form being so consistent, he should go close here.

3:30: York - Brando 11/4.

Everything looks to have come right for Kevin Ryan's charge. The Knavesmire has been hit by rain which has fostered softer underfoot conditions which will massively suit the five-year-old. Comparably, he made a fine return to action at Newmarket in April, displaying a potent turn of foot to get the verdict and that gives him a fitness edge over some of his rivals.

4:05: York - Shutter Speed 8/13.

Very impressive when routing a decent field at Newbury last time. Any more rain would be a slight worry but she has the best form and looks the potential class act.

4:35: York - Chessman 9/4 and Senator 20/1 Each Way.

Chessman was second at Newbury in April in what now looks a decent event. Seven furlongs and a long galloping track should suit and he looks the one to side with.

Senator won his first two starts nicely over six furlongs and whilst the form is nothing special, he got the job done well. In the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster, he pulled far too hard and was never going to get home. However, the form of that race has worked out very well and this son of Frankel, who has been gelded, remains one with potential.

5:05: York - It Dont Come Easy 7/2.

Looks a tough race to call but Richard Fahey's son of Kyllachy is bred to be speedy and he has been well-backed this morning.

5:35: York - St Malo 13/2 Each Way and Maraakib 16/1 Each Way.

Roger Varian's St Malo won by six lengths at Newcastle in October and this four-year-old son of Street Cry cost 200,000gns. Whilst he has to show he can transfer his form to turf, he is potentially the class act in the field.

Maraakib has won off a mark of 88 so the drop to 85 makes him of strong interest in this ultra-competitive handicap event. He should get the trip and at a big price, he makes appeal.
