Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has made the extravagant claim that that his side will be in contention for a top-four spot by then end of 2018.

United are now 12 points behind rivals Manchester City following their 3-1 defeat at the Etihad before the international break, while they are seven points behind Tottenham, who are currently fourth.

However, the former Chelsea boss believes his team will have claimed from eighth to a Champions League spot by the time the year is out.

"It is a big gap, but I know that until the end of December we have eight Premier League matches," said Mourinho.

"If I'm not wrong I think there are eight.

"We are speaking about 24 points for us to fight for and the other teams that are in the top four. I believe we are going to be there."

However, the bookies aren't as confident the Manchester side will gain a top four spot as they have them 1/5 to finish out a Champions League position.

Meanwhile, United will be hoping to close the gap by three points this weekend as Spurs host Chelsea at Wembley, while they go head-to-head with struggling Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

As expected Mourinho's men are heavy odds on (4/9) and Roy Hodgson's side are 7/1 to cause an upset.
