A French Open star has become only the sixth player in the history of the Open Era to achieve an astonishing tournament record at Roland Garros.

The second Grand Slam of the season is well into its second week, with the women's singles semi-finals taking place on Thursday before the men's matches on Friday.

There have been a number of significant shocks, with ATP world number one Jannik Sinner and reigning women's singles French Open champion Coco Gauff both suffering early exits.

In the women's singles event, there will be a first-time Grand Slam winner after world number one Aryna Sabalenka was defeated in the quarter-finals by Diana Shnaider.

There has been more history made, meanwhile, in the doubles tournaments.

Roland Garros doubles star equals history

Italy's Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori won the mixed doubles final on Thursday afternoon, defeating Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski and USA's Evan Klug by a score of 4-6, 6-3, (10-4).

The win means that Errani, 39, has won back-to-back French Open mixed doubles titles, having reached the final of the women's singles tournament back in 2012.

Errani did the double in 2025, having won the women's doubles event alongside partner Jasmine Paolini - who she also coaches.

She would have had the opportunity to go for the historic double-double in 2026, but Paolini was forced to withdraw from the doubles draw due to a foot injury and went on to lose in the second round of the singles event to Argentina's Solana Sierra.

Still, Errani was able to become just the sixth women's player in the Open Era - spanning from 1968 - to win the mixed and women's doubles event at Roland Garros in successive years.

Francoise Durr, Martina Navratilova, Fiorella Bonicelli, Venus Williams and Virginia Ruano Pascual are the other five players to have previously achieved the feat.

Ruano Pascual, a six-time winner of women's doubles at Roland Garros, tasted success in the mixed and women's event in 2001 before winning the women's event again in 2002.

Errani was already one of five women's players to win both doubles disciplines in this same year, with Durr, Ruano Pascual, Wendy Turnbull and Anne Smith the others.

The 39-year-old retired from singles competition last year, having reached a peak ranking of number five during her career.

She has won 36 doubles titles in her career, including the gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics tennis event alongside playing partner Paolini.

Speaking after winning the mixed doubles event alongside Vavassori on Thursday, Errani said: "I'm still living this dream that is never ending.

"This court is incredible. My dreams have [come true] here.

"Andrea, you are my best friend, and to share this with you is something crazy. I'm enjoying playing with you too much, it's too funny. You are too good."
