World rankings are incredibly important in tennis, as they have a significant impact on a player’s ability to be involved in the most prestigious silverware.
The four Grand Slams all have a similar system of selecting those that will compete in the competition each year.
There are three ways players can qualify: rank among the top 104 players who sign up for the Grand Slam, win 3 rounds in the qualifying, or receive a wild card.
A total of 128 players get to play in the main draw of each Grand Slam: 104 through ranking, 16 through qualifying, and 8 through wild cards.

One tennis player will be well aware of this and may be plotting a route through qualifying or as a wildcard for the next Grand Slam, Roland Garros, which is set to take place at the end of May.
David Goffin, who has won six ATP titles, has dropped out of the top 200 after a disastrous Munich Open performance as he was eliminated in qualifying.

The Belgian lost in straight sets to Emilio Nava, which has now seen him drop 51 places in the ATP Men’s Rankings, and he is now sitting at 230.
Goffin has reached the quarter-final of the Australian Open, Wimbledon and Roland Garros during his career, with the most recent coming in 2022 at the English competition.
The 35-year-old will now know that if he wants to reach this stage in the French Open this May, he will need to go through qualifying or be given a wildcard slot.
Goffin had lost to Nava a week earlier in the Monte-Carlo Masters, so it appears the American has his number.
He may be hoping that a wildcard will be given to him for Roland Garros so he has the chance to produce a fairytale ending to his career, as he has announced that 2026 will be his last year as a professional tennis player.
This will bring his 17-year career to an end, and to bring the curtain down was the ‘hardest decision’ he has ever had to make.
Goffin said: “Some decisions stay with you for a long time.
“I’ve given everything to this sport, and tennis has given me more than I could have ever imagined.
“The matches, the battles, the wins, the losses. The emotions. The people who were there through all of it.
“And that’s why this has been one of the hardest decisions of my life.”
