It's a little unclear just what Sony has planned for the PlayStation 5 in terms of backwards compatibility. Given that Microsoft has already committed to delivering full backwards compatibility from day one with the Xbox Series X, all eyes are on Sony to see if it'll offer a similar level of support.
Certainly, it'd be lovely if the next PlayStation gave us the option to play through not only our old PS4 games, but our PS3, PS2, and OG PlayStation games too. As it stands, we can be safe in the knowledge that the PS5 will apparently at least support the majority of PS4 titles.
This is according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, who revealed in a recent financial call that both the Xbox Series X and PS5 "will be running almost all the back catalogue of the previous consoles". We knew this to be the case with the Xbox Series X, but this is a promising sign for the PS5's approach to backwards compatibility.
"Those consoles will be running almost all the back catalogue of the previous consoles," Guillemot said. "It will be something new in the industry. It will help the old generations to continue to be big consoles on the market for years to come."

It's worth noting that this isn't the first we've heard of the PS5 supporting PS4 games. Back in October last year, Sony's Mark Cerny said that PS4 games would "definitely" run on the PS5. However, it wasn't clear which ones or how many. Guillemot's comments seem to suggest that most - if not all - titles will be supported.
Being able to dive into our old PS4 games on PS5 is obviously a wonderful prospect. Especially as I continue my dedicated campaign to get everyone I know to play through Bloodborne at least once. But while playing last gen titles on the next-gen console is all well and good, there can be little doubt that there's immense demand for Sony to take backwards compatibility even further and support older generations.
The Xbox Series X being able to support Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles at launch is obviously a big win for Microsoft. It's something that the company has also been praised for time and time again this generation, and is clearly something gamers are desperate to see Sony respond to.

Patents apparently filed by Sony last year seemed to suggest that the PS5 would rise to the occasion and let players experience the full PlayStation back-catalogue - but we probably won't know for sure until Sony decides to finally unveil the PS5 in all its glory. Hopefully we don't have much longer to wait.
