“This is one of the biggest changes to the equipment in the 150-year history of our sport and it will be fascinating to see this in action at the Crucible," says Jason Ferguson, the WPBSA chairman.
With just two days to go until April Fool’s Day, the World Snooker Tour (WST) has announced that the white cue ball will be replaced with a neon green version at this year’s World Championship.
That's right. Ahead of the 17-day event in Sheffield, the WST claim the neon green ball, as seen below, will be 'paying homage' to Midnite, who are the UK betting and casino partner for the tournament.
World No.2 Kyren Wilson, who can be seen posing with the ball, has given his thoughts on the proposed cue ball change.

“I honestly think it’s a fantastic step forward for snooker," he says. "The idea of the white ball turning Midnite neon green might sound bold at first, but that’s exactly what our sport needs right now - something that grabs attention and gets people talking.
“We’ve got such a proud history, especially at the World Snooker Championship, but evolution is key if we want to keep growing and bringing in a new generation of fans."

Wilson continued: “From a player’s perspective, it’ll be really interesting as well. The visuals are such a big part of how we read the game, so having that bright green cue ball under the lights at the Crucible could actually enhance our game."
“You’ve got to be open-minded about these changes," he added. "If it helps showcase the sport in a new way and makes people stop and watch, then that’s a win for everyone. Personally, I’m really excited by it. I think it could give the whole championship a fresh energy and create something quite iconic in its own right.”
Fans react to WST statement about neon green cue ball
The previously mentioned Ferguson believes fans and players "will love this new cue ball", but some have questioned whether the news is real or not ahead of April Fool's Day on Wednesday.
One fan wrote: "So. This is either a vaguely amusing early April Fool’s joke, or the most preposterous development in the history of snooker. I’m going to presume the former."
A second said: "Who pressed publish too early? I’m sure this was supposed to be an April Fool’s joke."
A third added: Hmmm. Can't think of anyone better to present this obvious early April Fool than Mr funny Kyren Wilson... come on guys, we're not gonna fall for this, are we?"
Peter Wright, who is the chief commercial officer at WST, has described the move as a bold one.
"Players are going to have to adapt fast to the new neon cue ball, especially under the intense pressure that the Crucible always brings," he says.
"This could really change the dynamic of the game and enhance the viewing experience for fans. We know it's a bold move but we are a sport which thrives on rising to the challenge."
